“Hallelujah, Sandy, screw ya! We’ll get through ya, ‘Cause we’re New Yorkers.” Over the years we’ve certainly heard our fair share of covers of Leonard Cohen’s classic song, Hallelujah. But Adam Sandler’s version during Wednesday night’s 12-12-12 Sandy Benefit Concert in Madison Square Garden takes the cake!
Sandler’s full performance can be seen below. As the verses goes on, you’ll notice that he also works in several other references – including “Times Square losing all its porn,” and “the mayor’s ban on 32-ounce Mountain Dew-ya.”
During the course of the 6-hour long concert, some of rock’s biggest names also took to the stage to perform. Highlights include sets by Bruce Springsteen, Eric Clapton, Billy Joel, Paul McCartney, The Who, and The Rolling Stones.
All proceeds were donated to the Robin Hood Relief Fund, who also organised the Concert for New York City after 9/11. According to the AFP, a massive R260m was raised in ticket sales and sponsorships alone.
