Details surrounding Prince Harry’s first kill in Afghanistan have emerged. It is believed that he took the lives of Taliban militants when his unit’s Apache helicopter came to the rescue of another patrol unit under attack.
The attack happened in late October – shortly after Harry returned to Afghanistan for his second tour of duty as gunship co-pilot. He was pulled out of his previous deployment with the Household Cavalry in 2008 after 77 days when foreign websites broke the news that he was on the ground in Afghanistan.
One of the soldiers on the ground said in an interview yesterday that his patrol had called in air support after they came under attack by the Taliban:
We were on patrol and the Apache helicopters were called in. We heard this posh voice come over the radio and knew it was Big H. they were tracking a Taliban leader – he was commander level. The Apache then let off some Hellfire missiles and its 30mm cannon and ‘boom’. It was Big H all the way.
Weapons at Harry’s disposal included 16 air-to-ground Hellfire missiles, two CRV7 pods with 76 rockets, as well as a 30mm cannon which fires 625 rounds per minute. His arsenal is controlled using a helmet-mounted display from the front seat of the aircraft by the co-pilot or “weapons systems officer.”
During his interview, the soldier also shared other details of his time spent with “Big H”:
I met him in the cookhouse. I saw this bloke standing in line and I went, ‘That’s Big H’. He’s like a normal squaddie. All the guys in Afghan have so much respect for him and love him. Big H is a legend, he’s been out in Afghan and he’s doing the business. All the guys love him – he’s Big H. He likes a drink and a laugh and he’s one of the lads.
