An American software developer has been fired after his bosses learned that he outsourced all his work to China – something he was being paid a six figure salary for.
The developer, only known as “Bob”, was constantly praised by his superiors for being “the best developer in the building”.
But unbeknownst to them, he typically began his “work day” with a two-hour marathon session of surfing Reddit.
Here’s how he spent the rest of his day:
- 09:30 – Arrive and surf Reddit for a couple of hours – mostly watching cat videos.
- 11:30 – Take lunch.
- 13:00 – Ebay time.
- 14:00 – Facebook and LinkedIn updates.
- 16:30 – End of day update e-mail to management.
- 17:00 – Go home.
Bob’s ruse was uncovered last year when his US-based company noticed ongoing network activity originating from Shenyang, China. Fearing a security breach by Chinese hackers, they contacted Verizon to get to the bottom of it.
The Verizon investigators noticed the suspicious activity was occurring regularly and often spanned the entire eight-hour workday. It wasn’t long before they found the culprit.
After investigating more, they found that Bob was pulling this scam off at multiple companies – earning several hundred thousands US dollars a year while only paying out $50 000 to the Chinese consulting firm he was outsourcing to.
Well played, sir. Well played.
