“You are married to these people. You are literally in a relationship with them.”
That was pretty much the gist of a feature on the lives of the personal assistants of Hollywood celebrities published in the New York times.
While paid handsomely, the bizarre range of duties required of a celebrity’s PA – including incredible emotionally availability – probably makes this job more of a brief stint than a long term career.
Here are a few highlights:
Lady Gaga: She demands that her personal assistant sleep in her bed, because she can’t sleep alone.
Naomi Campbell: She demands 25 lily-scented candles placed in the correct spots around every hotel suite she stays in. She demands that all of the alcohol from her minibar be moved to her assistant’s, since she doesn’t want others to think she’s drinking.
Claire Danes: She demands that her personal assistant drive her college, and kiss her goodbye. “My job was to be their best friend,” she says.
More, from The NY Times:
On the outside, these celebrities seem to have everything you can imagine — money, fame, friends — but they don’t.
Fame is a very lonely thing. It’s actually very depressing. You’re sequestered, in a way.
I’ve seen a lot of celebrities cling onto their personal assistant, but it’s really just [wanting] somebody to love them unconditionally.
Shem, man.
