Hell, print your own robot army, if you want. The future is NOW!
If you have access to a basic 3D printer, a few motors, a circuit board and a cool R7 000, the InMoov robot could be yours.
Gael Langevin, a 41 year old French sculptor, model-maker and dedicated robot developer, reckons it’s easy to replicate his invention, InMoov. “It’s about as difficult as assembling a cupboard from IKEA.”
Dammit, we love IKEA.
Langevin has been printing InMoov since last year in his spare time. The robot has a head, arms, hands and is currently awaiting the torso. The InMoov project began when Langevin was asked to print a prosthetic hand for a commercial photo shoot and used printing out InMoov as a practice round.
It can grab hold of things, tilt its head and move its arms around in various ways … and when I get around to building some legs, that’s when things will get really interesting. I’ve also posted some programming instructions — so you can make it respond to voice-activated commands.
Langevin is of the opinion that building this robot is something that can be done with the whole family over the weekend. But only if your family happens to be AWESOME.
