As global telecoms industries continue to boom, countries need to find innovative ways to make the expanding network of supporting telecoms infrastructure fit into the urban jungle. South African photographer, Dillon Marsh has produced a series of photo’s of South Africa’s tree-style cellphone towers. Marsh said:

In certain cases the disguised towers might not be noticed. But then an undisguised tower might not have been noticed either.

Marsh’s six month photography project began in, and 2009 documented a variety of fake tree designs.

The internet has since caught wind of Marsh’s series, and global reactions have ranged from perplexity to delight.

In 1996, Vodacom commissioned Ivo Branislav – who worked for a telecommunications company called Brolaz Projects – and Aubrey Trevor Thomas to minimise the “the visual pollution” that cellphone towers created. And thus, the first ever Palm Pole Tower made of non-toxic plastic was installed in Cape Town that same year.
