This may be the absolute height of laziness, but it’s still really awesome. Researchers at the University of Washington have improved on the once popular “clap-on, clap-off” method. With the use of Wi-Fi signals the new technology will be able to switch on lights, change the channel of the TV and change the volume on your radio. A simple gesture is all it will take.
The gesture technology is similar to that of an Xbox Kinect but cheaper. This is because the technology uses existing Wi-Fi routers – a plus because users won’t have to be in the same room.
An assistant professor of computer science and electrical engineering said:
Our approach is to see the motion and try using it an interesting way…The technology can detect very minute changes in people’s movement patterns.
The technology is called WiSee. Your movement changes the signal of the Wi-Fi and this change is recorded by the antenna on the router. To date the device has been tuned to recognise pushing, pulling, punching and six other gestures.
