Jason Johnston, from Mesquite Texas, took a boat about 25 km off the southern shore of Huntington Beach, California on Monday.Â
With his ground sardines and mackerel, Johnson managed to get a bite, a bite from an estimated 4 meter and 600kg Mako shark. The water beast took the Texan over two hours to be real in, ouch!
Jack Vitek, the records coordinator for the International Game and Fish Association:
Up until now, the largest shark caught by a sport fisherman weighed approximately 510kg.
This means that the shark Johnston caught, outweighs the largest recorded shark, by around 100kg’s. Of course a catch like this will cause some controversy.Â
California State University biologist Kady Lyons:
For animals, though, that have fairly low populations that we’re not really sure on their stability makes it a little difficult, in my opinion, at least, to justify or support something like that.
David McGuire, director of Shark Stewards:
People should be viewing these sharks as wonderful animals that are important to the ocean and admiring how beautiful they are. These kind of reality shows are not reality. The reality is we’re overfishing sharks and this macho big-game attitude should be a relic of the past.T his is not entertainment. It’s not right, in my view.
In Johnson’s defense, he claims that: “There are not that many sharks being taken out of the water,” and this is one of four a year that are. He believes “It’s just like any other fishing.”
