This is the rubbish that sits at the bottom of the ocean, buried beneath thousands of metres water. Theses items cannot make their way back to land and slowly decompose due to low levels of oxygen, scarcity of sunlight and the freezing water temperatures. These items will take decades to wither away.
A report has been detailed by scientists at Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute. 18,000 hours of underwater footage has been captured using remotely operated vehicles. The research uncovered some 1,1150 pieces of garbage lying on the ocean floor in Monterey Bay, California. Most of the rubbish is made from plastic.
These are some fo the objects that the researchers discovered on the ocean floor.
