Celebrations for the 4th of July were short lived when crowds gathered to enjoy the fireworks at Sim Valley, California. But instead of the fireworks shooting into the sky, they shot into the crowds.
Minor injuries were reported for at least 28 people, with most of them being described as “shrapnel-like injuries or burns”. Eyewitness Justice Allen said:
There was a big boom. Everybody started running down the street. People were screaming. Everybody was just terrified. People hid in bushes.
According to Police Commander John Parks the event had sufficient staff in attendance with enough “police, park rangers and firefighters” to ensure the situation was dealt with immediately.
Another Police Commander, Stephanie Shannon, said that no foul play was expected but it appeared that the explosions were as a result of an industrial accident.
