This here is a 12-litre bottle of 2009 Chateau Margaux, and it can be yours for a very cool $195,000 (R1,950,000). Yes, that makes it R25,000 a glass. So, not for the braai, then.
Only six of these so-called ‘Balthazar’ sized bottles have been produced. You can buy three of them from Le Clos, whose flagship outlet is located at the Dubai International Airport, Terminal 3. They also have an online shop.
The bottle is housed in an oak box, raised on steel legs. The bottle itself has enjoyed the gold-engraving attentions of a master craftsman.
The almost R2 million price tag gets you the bottle, and a first class flight to France to visit the estate in Bordeaux, where you’ll enjoy a private tour of the cellars and vineyard before sitting down to dinner with chateau winemaker and managing director Paul Pontallier.
