National Geographic recently compiled an interactive map that allows us to examine what the Earth might look like if we allow all the sea-ice to melt. It is estimated that if said ice does melt, the ocean will rise by a full 66 metres. And anyone who knows how the ocean works will know that 66 metres is a stupendously ridiculous number that will have massive effects on the landscape.

There are over five million cubic miles of ice on Earth (far too much to even try and begin to imagine), and some scientists say that it would take more than 5,000 years for us to melt it all – so relax for now. However, if we do keep adding carbon to the atmosphere, we’ll soon have a completely ice-free planet, where the average temperature is 27 degrees instead of the current 15.

If you have a look at the screenshot below, you’ll notice that London has disappeared, along with Amsterdam and Venice (fair enough). Luckily, because Africa is a plateau, it means we’ll be safe.

It also means that we’ll have all the poms trying to get back in here..
