If you’re the grandson of a Nobel Peace Prize winner and all-round good guy, the world kind of expects you to be at least somewhat good-natured, yourself. Such was the expectation that weighed on Mandla Mandela’s shoulders. Furthermore, as Madiba’s eldest grandchild, you’re also expected to handle your affairs with a certain degree of maturity. Sadly, despite the expectations, Mandla managed to mess it all up. Quite badly.
Randall Titus & Associates Attorneys have withdrawn from representing Mandla, after it emerged that he had failed to pay his legal fees. Mandla must have been doing a lot of time in court, because he’s managed to accrue around R500,000 in unpaid lawyers fees. As a result, Mandla has been issued with a summons. Randall Titus confirms:
Yes, I can confirm that we have withdrawn as Mr Mandela’s lawyers. This is due to a lack of instructions and other things. We have issued summons to a sheriff to recover our money from him.
According to the court papers the firm is claiming for the period between May 2012 and May 2013, “as claimed by the plaintiff from the defendant by virtue of the taxed attorney/client bills of cost for professional legal services rendered by plaintiff to defendant, at the latter’s special insistence and request”.
Sounds serious.
