Fake Sign Language Interpreter: The Voices Made Me Do It

Thami Jantjie, the “sign language interpreter” at the centre of an international furore has admitted that what he signed at Nelson Mandela’s memorial service on Tuesday was nonsense, but it wasn’t because he isn’t qualified to do the job. He has schizophrenia, and the voices made him do it.

Thami Jantjie has advised numerous journalists that he suffers from schizophrenia, and takes medication for the condition. Jantjie claims he was in the grip of a schizophrenic episode during the proceedings.

There was nothing I could do. I was alone in a very dangerous situation. I tried to control myself and not show the world what was going on. I am very sorry, it’s the situation I found myself in. Life is unfair. This illness is unfair. Anyone who doesn’t understand this illness will think that I’m just making this up.

The ANC, meanwhile, claims that they don’t know how the guy got hired for the gig, and have laid the blame on the doorstep of the SABC event and broadcast production teams.

Which is weird, you know, because this guy is a regular at ANC-only events, like this one in 2012.

Scrutinise those moves. Was he having a schizophrenic episode then, as well?
