We’ve all received spam mail relating to something along the lines of a rich Nigerian Prince in dire need of your help to move funds out of the country. Or a wealthy relative has died and your bank account details are all that stands between you becoming filthy rich. Well, this time it was a Nigerian engineer promising love, which left a grandmother dead.
Jette Jacobs, 67, a grandmother from Australia, was found dead in her rented Johannesburg apartment in March last year. The story surrounding her death started in 2009 when she met Nigerian Orowo Jesse Omokoh, 28, through an online dating site. She and her online Romeo met for the first time in 2010 in South Africa, following a year of liaison. She returned home and over the next couple of years deposited nearly R900 000 into her lover’s bank account.
Their next face-to-face meeting occurred last year, despite friends and family warning her about the dangers, again in Johannesburg. Found over-dosed on pills at her last lover’s rendezvous, Jette Jacobs was the victim of a four year long scam. Omokoh was arrested last week by the Nigerian Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and is believed to be involved in a large cyber-crime syndicate.
Maybe we should keep a closer eye on grandma’s Facebook account from now on, hey gang?
