Nicknamed the Demolition Man, Matteo Renzi has been appointed prime minister of Italy after Enrico Letta was forced out. Renzi, 39, has become Italy’s youngest prime minister.
Formerly the mayor of Florence, Renzi was elected as party secretary in December last year. Up until then he had no national political experience and was not even a member of parliament. Renzi himself was behind an orchestrated internal party vote, ousting the former prime minister. Renzi will be the third unelected prime minister of Italy in the last three years.
Renzi has vowed to the face of the Italian government with large far-reaching political and financial reforms in mind.
