In England They Put Spikes On The Ground To Deter Homeless Folk

Homelessness is so rife in our daily lives we often simply turn a blind eye to the real problems underlying this tragedy. These folks have sent a very loud very clear message as to their opinion of those who have no place but the street to sleep at night: essentially, "MOVE ON... we don't want you littering our pavement." Disgusting if you ask us....

With the downpours and absolutely freezing weather of late, the issue of homelessness is a little more top-of-mind for us than usual. With such terrible weather, any piece of roof is coveted real estate when you do not have a home to go to and the heavens open.

Of course, homelessness is not something that happens only here in South Africa and globally there are hundreds of initiatives to prevent people from finding themselves in this predicament. While most of these initiatives are advocating the humanity of the homeless, some of them are purely because businesses don’t want the image of a homeless person huddled in their doorway.

This second kind has caused outrage in England recently.

Metal spikes many believe have been installed to deter homeless people from sleeping in an alcove outside a block of flats in London have sparked outrage on Twitter, after pictures of the building went viral.

Andrew Horton, 33, of Woking, Surrey, took a picture of the studs outside of the block of privately-owned flats on Southwark Bridge Road in the borough of Southwark as he walked to work on Wednesday.
Although the function of these spikes is mostly speculation at this stage, it certainly seems like a reasonable conclusion to why they were installed. Moving a homeless person on to the next doorway is certainly not going to tackle the issue of homelessness in any constructive way, and in a society as protected as England it is surprising the studs do not come with a warning. It is truly indicative of just how worthless we think homeless people are.
Really sad.
Use all that money to fund a night shelter if you don’t want people sleeping on the street.
