There’s nothing like backing your child’s talent like putting money on him to win.
This is exactly what Rory Mcllroy’s dad did, as Gerry (54) placed a £600 bet on his son to win the British Open over a decade ago, and with Rory taking home two major championships over the weekend. Gerry scored big and won £180,000 (around R3,268,000).
Rory himself wins a handsome £975,000 for winning the Claret Jug, but hasn’t forgotten that his dad and his mates will also be taking home a little prize.
They are all going to be very happy. My dad has never reminded me but I knew he’d done it – it’s a nice little bonus.
