I’m just going to throw it out there… South Africa has 45 Blue Flag beaches, 27 of which are in the Western Cape, which means that we have more than half of them within a few hours drive away.

There are more than 40 countries that take part in the Blue Flag Beaches project, with over 4 000 Blue Flag beaches worldwide.
Incase you don’t know what a Blue Flag beach is:
Blue Flag is an international award given to beaches that meet strict criteria for cleanliness, water and sand quality, as well environmental education and management. The criteria are set by the Foundation for Environmental Education, the international co-ordinators of the Blue Flag campaign in Europe. In South Africa it is headed by the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa.
It is focused on the conservation of marine and coastal habitats, and is designed to raise environmental education and awareness, as well as increase sound environmental practices among tourists, local residents and beach management.
Luckily, most of these beaches are within our convenient driving distance: you can head to Clifton 4th, Muizenberg and Llandudno. If you’re out of towners, you have Grotto Beach in Hermanus and Knysna’s Buffalo Bay. As I said, there are 27 to choose from.
Also, I’m going to point out that one of them is Camps Bay. And we all know that that’s one of our favourite beaches because you can roll off it, covered in sand, salt and Banana Boat tanning oil, and straight into Caprice.
