This is almost hilarious, except that it is real and it is our president which makes it 90% less funny.
Remember the arms deal? And how Zuma was being charged with fraud and corruption? Well, it turns out that Zuma thought the charges against him should be dropped because “corruption is only a crime in a Western paradigm”.
Zuma’s lawyers argued even further that if it was indeed a crime, there were no victims anyway.
Er, what about the general public?
This is all part of a memorandum from March 2009, drawn up by Advocate Billy Downer, the senior state prosecutor at the time. The documents also possibly refer to Shabir Shaik.
Prosecutors replied:
“The law prescribes that it is criminal. Until the law is amended to provide that institutionalised cronyism is not criminal, the ‘Western paradigm’ will have to be accepted.”
