Taylor’s new video for “Blank Space” off her 1989 album starts by showing us the beginning of a relationship (champagne, horse riding and candy hearts) which then turns sour.
The lyrics suggest this is the fault of her man and she turns somewhat cray cray, mouthing at the camera, “Because darling, I’m a nightmare dressed as a daydream”. She throws his iPhone in a fountain, cuts up his shirts, destroys a painting of him in their lavish home and attacks his vintage car with a golf club.
In reality Taylor has been rather unlucky in love with Harry Styles, Jake Gyllenhaal and John Mayor all dumping her. It then feels like this is the way Taylor would have liked to react in reality but because she is a “good girl” she represses such behaviour.
Maybe she’s sending a warning to future lovers, but Taylor might end up scaring them all away instead.
