There seems to be a shitstorm of sorts brewing on Facebook, as one Alexis Gillis has lashed out at famed Sea Point restaurant the Duchess of Wisbeach and its owner, Theresa Beukes.

Alexis Gillis is the daughter of Arthur Gillis, the CEO of Protea Hotels. Well that’s what LinkedIn says he is, but it looks like he is now the Non-Executive Chairman for Africa development at Marriot hotels. Protea Hotels was bought for over R2 billion last year, when Gillis was CEO.

According to a friend of Alexis:

Alexis and she is completely uninterested in money, definitely not a princess, doesn’t EVER make a scene and has been born into a ‘customer is always right’ world. She has studied at hotel school and is well versed in what is right and wrong in the service industry.

    Interesting.

So here are the two sides to the story.

First, From Alexis Gillis on her publicly accessible Facebook page:

Then, the response from Theresa Beukes, from Duchess of Wisbeach:

We’re not here to do an investigation or get comments from both parties (we’ve never professed to be the New York Times and anyway, they’ve both given their sides to the story in a rather public fashion) – we’re simply pointing this interesting story out, as you might want to follow up on Facebook. The privacy settings on Alexis Gillis’ Facebook page (plus photos etc.) is set to public and interaction has been encouraged:

It should be noted that Theresa Beukes seems to have deleted the Duchess of Wisbeach’s Facebook page..

Here are some of the comments so far – including from Arthur Gillis:

Then this, from 2oceansvibe friend and owner of Hard Pressed Café on Bree Street:

Ok, so there you have it.

Were you at the Duchess of Wisbeach (or their popup shop) on Friday night? Did you witness any of the drama? Do let us know..
