Let’s take a trip down memory lane to that time your parents had too much red wine, put on the record player (you may notice we’ve gone back quite far) and danced around the living room singing along to the Don McLean classic ‘American Pie’. If this never happened I feel for your childhood, parents should always set good examples of how to handle oneself after drinking too much liquor.

Well, Don is now auctioning off the original handwritten lyrics to his 1971 classic and they’re expected to fetch a pretty penny. This from Rolling Stone:

Christie’s is estimating that the never-before-seen 16-page document, featuring 237 lines of manuscript and 26 lines of typed text, will fetch up to $1.5 million. The lyrics are scheduled to be auctioned off on April 7th.

Heads up, I did manipulate the image above to make the words a little clearer. If you can cough up the $1.5 million to buy the document I’m sure you can get yourselves a good pair of reading glasses too.

Fans of McLean who miss out fear not, it seems he’s set on auctioning off most of his goodies before he heads upstairs. Rolling Stone again:

I only have an attachment to my wife, children and my guitar,” he says. “In fact, I’m going to rid myself of a lot of stuff. In a year or two, I’m going to have a big Christie’s auction with guitars, clothes, boots, saddles, silver and watches.

Nice how he lumped his guitar in there with the wife and kids. Then again it has probably made him untold millions throughout his career so we can understand the attachment.
