Sometimes you just have to splurge a little on birthday treats. You know, a fine bottle of wine or whiskey, that pair of shoes you’ve had your eye on for a while, some tasty elephant meat…

We’ve long since given up on Bob Mugabe’s sanity but he still has the power to shock us from time to time and his plans for his 91st birthday bash have left many angered. This from News24:

…prominent farmer, Tendai Musasa had pledged to donate two elephants, two buffalos, two sables [pictured below], five impalas and a lion worth a combined $120 000 towards the president’s birthday bash that will be held on 28 February.

So, the animals are going to roam the area and provide entertainment for the guests? No, they will be slaughtered and served up for consumption…charming. This has of course raised the ire of conservationists and laypeople alike. News24 quoting the Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force chairperson Johnny Rodrigues:

They have been doing this for years now. Every time there is a celebration…, several elephants and buffalo are killed for the celebrations. This is totally unethical and should not be allowed.

So it’s not the first time then…you remember that nice bottle of whiskey or wine I mentioned earlier? Buy it, but don’t drink it on your birthday. Save it, let it age well and pop it open when one of the world’s last remaining dinosaurs is laid to rest.

The last word? Over to you Karen…
