I can clearly remember the days of being a schoolkid and counting down the days until the Maynardville Community Chest Carnival began. Rides, candy floss, more rides…every laatie’s idea of a good night out.

Well you’re never too old to enjoy a good time and this year the Carnival has gone all out to make the event one for kids and adults alike. It is, after all, for a good cause.

One of Southern Africa’s leading fundraising charity events, the Community Chest Carnival began as a theatrical garden party and has been transformed into a festival of food, fun, and entertainment—all for the purpose of raising money for charity.

So what is going on this year that promises to make it such a jol? To date the Carnival has confirmed that much loved reggae band Sons of Selassie will perform as will hip hop/R&B master Von Leigh. This will also be a chance to hear Hot Water (pictured above), who have cut three critically acclaimed studio albums and has played at every major music festival in the country including Kirstenbosch Gardens and Rocking the Daisies.

Also on stage will be the Afrikaans House and kwaito duo—Mark Matroos and Von D from Mitchells Plain—who go by the name of Afrikaans Ruk. Others in the musical line up include Fritzherbert and Chasing Time.

So let’s do our bit for local charity and support the good guys. You might not fit into the shoes you wore back in the day but get some that fit you and prepare to kick them off.

The Carnival takes place from 25-28 February at Maynardville Park in Wynberg. You can find all the info you need HERE.
