Earlier this week we saw protesters at UCT showing their distaste with what they say is an attitude of ‘white imperialism’ at the educational institution, resulting in the Cecil John Rhodes statue being defiled in a ‘poo protest’. Monday’s incident saw around 12 protesters take part, and now the movement has gathered steam.
Yesterday saw thousands of students come together and demand that the statue of the former colonialist be removed from its current position. UCT Student Representative Council President Ramabina Mahapa issued this statement, reported by eNCA:
The mass meeting was held to address issues of institutional symbolism that depicts black people in a bad light, staff transformation, transformation at the university as a whole and also the concerns of the LGBTI community that feels marginalised at the university.
As of yet representatives for the UCT management have been unavailable for comment.
Check out the video up top to hear the students’ concerns.
