So it seems statues are in this autumn. First it was the Cecil John Rhodes statue at UCT, then it was the defacing of a statue on UKZN’s campus and the Paul Kruger statue in Pretoria. Then, just when you thought you might have heard it all, a statue of Jacob Zuma pops up on Lion’s Head.
Now the statue didn’t last very long before it was destroyed but it did manage to cause quite a stir. This from City Press:
The statue, which was titled The Swordsman of the Nation, was placed on top of the popular tourist destination with an incription scribbled on its base.
It read: “If a criminal like this can get a statue, so can I – JZ.” It is unclear whether the ‘criminal’ referred to is Cecil John Rhodes or President Jacob Zuma – or both.
The statue didn’t exactly give many props to the physique of Zuma, depicting him as short, overweight and nude. The statue was also holding a sex toy in its hand.
Pictures later emerged of the statue cut in half and the sex toy removed. Jacob couldn’t be reached for comment in his ivory tower.
