Now there are some controversial statements you can make or be called out on and still keep your job. One of the keys, you see, is to admit your wrongs and offer something resembling an apology.

The Wits Student Representative Council President Mcebo Dlamini has found this out the hard way, after he stood by his praise of the Nazi leader. I suppose we should now call him the former SRC president as he has been fired from his position, also facing further questions to do with his academic career. This from IOL:

A disciplinary hearing ruled on Monday that Dlamini be excluded – a sentence that will remain suspended for a year as long as he does not contravene any of the university’s rules…

A source close to Dlamini’s disciplinary committee said while Dlamini was under investigation for his recent “I love Hitler” comments on Facebook, it was previous indiscretions, including the assault of a senior staff member, that led to his removal.

Nothing like assaulting staff to hasten your removal from the presidency. It has also been revealed that Dlamini was involved in a host of angry email exchanges with senior staff members, making his rap sheet a rather impressive account of how to lose friends and alienate people.

Wits vice-chancellor Adam Habib became involved in a war of words with the student, refuting Dlamini’s accusations that the university was an anti-black establishment:

The Wits student population is 74 percent black, so on what basis is he making this assertion? Anyone can make an assertion, but one needs proof to back it up. He has not shown evidence to back up his claims.

After coming under fire on Facebook, where he initially posted his admiration for the Führer, Dlamini also threatened to kill an individual and his children. Ah, it’s starting to make sense now, birds of a feather and all that…
