Anyone who has watched their favourite football team has no doubt spent a great deal of time shouting at the screen about what they would do differently. I support Newcastle, so most of my energy currently goes towards hating on Mike Ashley, Mike Williamson and Gabriel Obertan.
But enough of my troubles, let’s talk about someone who actually has the power to change the club he supports. That man is Aliko Dangote, Africa’s wealthiest man with an estimated fortune of £10.4 billion (R189 billion), and he has hopes of snapping up English Premier League (EPL) outfit Arsenal.
Now his interest stretches back to 2010, when former director Lady Nina Bracewell-Smith was selling her shares, but the Nigerian was unable to make the deal happen. Here’s the Guardian:
Dangote, whose business interests include sugar, flour and oil, remains keen to become part of the Emirates Stadium club sometime in the future.
Speaking to Bloomberg, he said: “I still hope, one day at the right price, that I will buy the team. I might buy it, not at a ridiculous price but a price that the owners won’t want to resist. I know my strategy.”
So what would his ownership mean for the future of the wrinkled, sour-faced French whinger they call Arsene Wenger?
Dangote, however, suggested Arsène Wenger’s side should be achieving more. He added: “[Wenger] needs to change his style a bit. They need new direction.”
