  • You Won’t Believe The People In This Photo Shoot Are Actually Sex Dolls

Art sure is advancing itself. I remember staring at a light switch in the Tate Modern once. Upon realising it was in fact a light switch and not some influential piece that I should ponder the meaning of for years to come, I left and went to Madame Tussauds, because that is the stuff I can understand (I still enjoy looking at a good Pierneef over a cuppa, don’t you worry).

Oh! Speaking of Madame Tussauds and her wax sculptures… How do you feel about these ladies (and dude)?

They form part of Stacy Leigh’s photo series called “Average Americans (Who Just Happen To Be Sex/Love Dolls)”. Yep, sex dolls.

Made from high-tech rubber, Leigh was inspired to use them after watching the HBO docu-series “Real Sex”. She explains how, in the future, people will seek “surrogate” alternatives for relationships outside of the ones they have with their mobile phones.

Leigh dives deep into the uncanny valley and comes up with a lonely hypothesis: In the future, we will love robots. These are the early days of robotics. The love dolls are the crude beginnings of what may someday be the norm.

She admits to finding the dolls “pretty creepy” to start with, but “the uncanny feeling subsided and led to an empathy. I felt like I needed to show the dolls how they might be if integrated into society”.

Oh my. OK. Just don’t start taking them for walks.

This all just reminds me of Lars and the Real Girl.
