If you’re the kind of person that enjoys watching those Real Housewives type shows but are looking to broaden your horizons, we’re going to let you in on a little secret – South Africa’s parliamentary sittings are bite-size and filled with more bitch-fighting than anything you will find on TV these days.

So today saw President Jacob Zuma head to parliament to answer questions from Members of Parliament. Now you would think that proceedings would be dominated by the government aiding and abetting a known war criminal, Sudanese President (Dictator) Omar al-Bashir, in his escape from our shores.

Alas it was a familiar favourite that brought proceedings to a standstill, with this timeline below taken from News24:

14:03 – MPs stand then take seats. EFF MPs are there in their red worksuits.

14:07 – EFF MP starts with: We don’t see anything on paper about Nkandla, we want to know when is he going to pay back the money.

14:10 – I’m not going to allow you people from the EFF to have these kinds of disruptions, says Mbete trying to remain calm.

But more EFF MPs demand to know when Zuma will “pay back the money”. Now the ANC’s Stone Sizani is on his feet.

14:11 – You can’t tell me to sit down! yells Julius Malema. There’s nothing special about you, he angrily tells the ANC’s Stone Sizani.

14:17 – Mbete wants to suspend proceedings while the Chief Whips meet in the Secretary’s Office.

You know what’s coming next, don’t you?

So they sat at 14:03 and JZ was munching on a piece of choccie at 14:18. That’s 15 minutes before the scene became so ridiculous that parliament had to be adjourned.

Beat that Real Housewives, your abomination of a TV show usually pollutes our screens for around an hour. Raise your game.

You can follow the blow-by-blow account of what goes down in today’s parliament, if and when they return from the adjournment, HERE.
