I suppose it is true that we all yearn for a better life than we one we live, but let’s just be thankful that most of us will never have to resort to measures like this.
The port of Calais in France is currently experiencing an employee strike that has left them chronically short-staffed. It looks like migrants wanting to make their way into the UK have seized on the opportunity, taking such drastic measures as trying to hop onto moving trucks.
The incidents are causing some political unrest with this from the Telegraph:
The mayor of Calais on Monday called on France to provoke a “diplomatic incident” with Britain, saying the UK should either join Europe’s borderless Schengen zone or leave Europe altogether.
Natacha Bouchart said that Britain does not give a “euro” towards helping the town handle migrants amassing in the northern port and that the lack of UK help suggested it “is not honoured to be part of Europe”.
Of course the UK loves being part of Europe, why do you think so many young Brits travel to places like Ibiza and Malia? They’re all about soaking up the European culture, you see.
