A 23-year-old woman lost her life in a tragic bungee jumping accident in Granada, Spain.

Kleyo De Abreu, who was born in London but raised in Cape Town and graduated from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, had recently returned to the UK and was holidaying in Spain when the accident occurred.

Whilst the exact circumstances are not yet known it is believed that she hit an ancient Roman bridge crossing during her second jump of the day. Below from the Telegraph:

The old stone bridge runs below a modern, metallic crossing that she leapt from. Miss De Abreu was left dangling lifeless from the rope as her aunt watched on in horror…

Specialist rescuers took 25 minutes to reach her and pronounced her dead after freeing her from the bungee cords, laying her body on the tarmac under a blanket…

[A spokesman for the Guardia Civil in Granada said] “although it is too early to draw any conclusions about the circumstances of the death, one of the lines of inquiry is that there was a miscalculation with the rope”.

Her father, to whom she had just returned after almost 23 years, was understandably emotional and had this to say to Sky News:

Every father will say this but she was very special, she was a very beautiful young woman who had all her life ahead of her…

She was 23 years old but to me she will always be my little baby and I would very much like to make sure this doesn’t happen again to anybody else.

This really is such a terrible story and a sobering reminder that tragedy can strike at any given moment.
