Over a hundred years ago, a couple of Afrikaans families declared game over on their conquest to colonise South Africa and carried on their trek, missioning over the sea to Argentina. With the goal of establishing another new world in the south of the American continent, there were hopes that they would be followed by other non-rainbow-nation believers and join in on the colonisation of yet another continent. Unfortunately, the land that reminded them of their beloved Karoo wasn’t strong enough to fossilise their heritage and ended up eroding what’s left of the small outpost’s Afrikaans culture instead.

In a remote stretch of Patagonia, Argentina, there is an over 100-year-old community that speaks Afrikaans – a language only spoken in South Africa. After the destruction of a war with the British, these Boers – descendants of Dutch settlers – sailed across the ocean to start a new life. Today, only a few dozen still speak the language and they are struggling to keep their culture alive.

News of their existence was released a couple of years ago and if you have been following the Facebook page, you may have noticed that they have just released the trailer for the upcoming film, ‘Boere op die Aardsdrempel’.  The film is basically a portrait of the community and follows one family’s longing to reconnect with South Africa.
