Remember last week Monday, after the massive uproar over the documentary ‘Luister’, I told you that it is now Stellenbosch’s turn to be under the racist spotlight? Well, here we go.
Reports have now come in that a university student has been banned from his on campus residence, Helshoogte, after an incident occurred in the early hours of last Friday morning. The complainant, Nathan Lewis, a final year music student, was attending a house dance in the residence when he was confronted by the respondent and asked what he was doing there. When he replied explaining that he was a part of their singing group, the respondent allegedly called him a “k****-moffie”. This is all according to a report by Netwerk24.
The university is currently investigating the complaint and will take the necessary actions according to the outcome.
Stellenbosch University maintains a policy of zero tolerance with regard to the violation of human rights, victimisation in any form, racism, classism, sexism and all other forms of discrimination.
Apparently, university management will be appearing before the portfolio committee on higher education and training today to explain its transformation plans.
Until then, we’ll be waiting for the next issue highlighted.
