A new trend of burglaries are going down in Cape Town’s CBD.
Thieves are dressing in smart clothes and driving upmarket cars – sometimes with fake number plates – to gain access into blocks of flats when the entrance gate is left open. Then the fun begins as they search for entry into any apartment that has what they want.
A number of apartment blocks in Vredehoek, Oranjezicht and Gardens have been hit, and the burglars repeatedly ring buzzers until an unsuspecting resident opens the main entrance point for them. They then force their way into units, using crowbars and screwdrivers aiming to steal flat screen televisions, laptops and jewellery.
But the worst of it all is that it is suspected that the burglars follow social media pages posts on their activities so as to monitor suspicious reports. This is a massive problem as most people who join neighbourhood groups on Facebook expect a certain element of privacy.
More and more users are moving away from Facebook onto platforms that have a little more security – and privacy. Like the increasingly popular Ourhood which requires each and every user to be verified before they can access neighbourhood information.
A connected neighbourhood is a safer neighbourhood. Join 1,200 neighbourhoods using Ourhood to speak to their real neighbours.
