  • Going Too Far? UCT Protesters Raid Dining Hall Food [Video]

21 Oct 2015 by Sloane Hunter in Education, Lifestyle, Opinion, University Of Cape Town
Protesting UCT students raid dining hall food

WATCH: UCT protesters break into Rochester House dining hall and raid foodThe protesters were hot, tired and hungry from three hours of marching around campus. When they reached Rochester House residence at around 12.30pm, a small group climbed through the window and tucked into the food that was laid out for the resident's lunch. They passed bread, juice and meals out the windows to other waiting protesters outside.

Before we begin, I’d like to let you know that there are two sides to this video. The media, and then the reality.

It has been reported by The South African that students who were protesting broke into the Rochester Dining Hall to steal food that was prepped for the resident’s lunch. The general idea is that these “thugs” stole food that was made for paying students who eat at the dining hall. But guess what, these “thugs” are the paying students.

In reality, it has come out that students broke into the dining hall to take food that was left over from breakfast. No lunch could be prepped because the workers of UCT joined forces with the student protest in an effort to stop outsourcing after breakfast was served.
