Bafana Bafana, those guys who gave it their all at the 2010 World Cup, have fallen away a touch since then.
Currently struggling in their African Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers, Bafana needed a decent result against Cameroon to boost their chances. Enter Hlompho Kekana and that bullet shot above, with IOL describing the story behind the wonder strike:
“It started at training at my club some four months back,” said Kekana. “I always check how the goalkeepers leave their lines when the opposition is attacking … after we dispossessed Cameroon, I looked up and saw the keeper well off his line and I took a chance – thankfully, it went in.
“I was excited because I have been trying to score such goals at my club, but could not. At training, I would hit more than 10 balls with none going in and it was frustrating.
“But when the goal comes in a match against a team the calibre of Cameroon, it always brings joy – and not only to me but to my teammates and the entire country, which shows just how much the goals means to everyone, not just to me.”
Unfortunately Bafana could only manage a 2-2 draw and we need a decent result in this evening’s match, once again against Cameroon, if we are to make it to the 2017 tournament.
Small victories though – Kekana’s effort makes David Beckham’s effort from way back when seem pretty bang average, doesn’t it?
