If you have an iPhone, you may have noticed that your apps do a little cleaning every now and then, but there’s no option to do the spring clean automatically. Here’s a screenshot of what it looks like – check the faded Facebook icon above.
I got that by doing something that one reddit user discovered by accident, going from 800 MB to 4.9 GB of free space. It cleans up your installed apps to remove data, cookies and histories that are no longer needed. Here’s how:
- Go into the iTunes store and search for a long film, like Lord of the Rings.
- The film must be bigger than the amount of space left on your device. If it’s not, you may be charged for the film.
- Click ‘Rent’ and a prompt will appear saying there is not enough storage left to rent the selection.
- Then there will be a choice of tapping OK or Settings.
- Hitting Settings takes the user to the Settings menu, where the amount of storage available on the device will have increased.
- You do not need to pay to rent the film, as the lack of space will prevent that from happening.
Go ahead, try it.
