Voted for by more than 75 000 readers, the 2015-16 Telegraph Travel Awards have been announced. Comprised of 13 categories, a survey is conducted of the world’s best travel services such as destination, airlines, tour operators and cruise lines.

While most of them don’t matter to us as South Africans two definitely do.

The awards were introduced by Charles Starmer-Smith, The Telegraph’s Head of Travel, and presented by Gyles Brandreth, the broadcaster and former MP. Guests at the event included John Simpson, Martin Bell, Michael Buerk and Kate Adie.

    Best country

    1. New Zealand
    2. Maldives
    3. South Africa

    Best city

    1. Cape Town
    2. Vancouver
    3. Venice

Surprised? Definitely not. Since the value of the rand dropped, more and more Europeans / Britons have made their way down south for the summer season – however, I unfortunately doubt winter will be a deterrent.
