Last night Jamie Vardy really did have a party, and he was joined by the rest of the ensemble (minus understated manager Claudio Ranieri) that have somehow pulled off the greatest upset in modern sporting history.
That’s a big claim, sure, but one only has to look at the odds given at the beginning of the season – 5000 to 1 – to understand how much of a David versus Goliath victory this really is.
Let’s look at bets you could have taken at the beginning of the Premier League season back in August 2015 that offered shorter odds – below from the BBC:
Prime Minister Simon Cowell – 500/1
Piers Morgan as Arsenal manager – 2,500/1
Loch Ness monster to be discovered – 500/1
Kim Kardashian for US president – 2,000/1
Is Elvis alive? – 2,000/1
If you’re still struggling to grip the scale of their achievement let’s stick with sports, these examples below from Metro:
Arsenal’s ‘Invincibles’ to go the whole season unbeaten in 2003/04 – 33/1
Liverpool to win the Champions League Final at HT – 50/1
That would be the final where they 3-0 down at half time and came back to win on penalties. Anyway, what about Japan beating the Boks at the World Cup?
Japan to beat South Africa in this year’s Rugby World Cup – 80/1
That’s right, over 60 times as likely as Claudio Ranieri-led Leicester taking home the trophy. A few more to chew on:
Manchester United to win the treble in 1999 – 100/1
Germany beating Brazil 7-1 in the World Cup semi final – 500/1
It’s hard not to love the Leicester fairytale, which is why so many football fans around the world shared the joy of the players at the final whistle. Here are a few scenes from the party at Jamie Vardy’s house after the title was confirmed:
Captain Wes Morgan joining in the fun:
One feels there may be a few hangovers around that training ground today but hell, I think they’ve more than earned them.
