I don’t want to sound like a snooty patron here, but restaurant service in South Africa has a long way to go before it comes close to what is offered overseas.
Of course there are places that are exceptions to that rule, but wherever this Camps Bay waiter worked probably ain’t one of them.
That’s because this chap stands accused of skimming a whopping R60 000 from a customer’s bank card, appearing in court this past Friday.
The customer must have been flashing some bling around if the waiter thinks he can nab a cool R60k without it being noticed, with this below from News24:
Hawks spokesperson Captain Lloyd Ramovha confirmed that Ishmail Sulaiman, 30, faces charges related to fraud after he was caught on a surveillance camera skimming a man’s debit card on June 7.
He was arrested last week after the customer realised that R60 000 was missing from his account after his visit to the establishment.
“On review of the video footage of the affected day the waiter is clearly seen swiping the customer’s card on one… device, which he immediately conceals in his apron, before using the other machine which supposedly belongs to the restaurant,” Ramovha said.
What’s scary is the fact that if you’re dealing in amounts as large as that this probably isn’t your first rodeo, and who knows how many other unsuspecting customers he has stolen from along the way.
The bail application will now take place on July 1, and we’re guessing he probably won’t be working front of house any time before then.
