  • The Outrageous Story Of How A YouTube Star Came To Sponsor A Professional Football Team [Video]

Some football fans are fickle – just watch how you all of a sudden see more Leicester City jerseys around, or how oil-rich Chelsea and Manchester City have now become fashionable teams to support.

That’s not true across the board though, because fans don’t come more loyal than those who support Wimbledon AFC over in London.

On the other side of the world is a chap called John Green, a YouTube star with close on three million subscribers. But what on earth does he have to with the story of a football team that started from scratch in the UK?

Good question – here’s how VICE Sports describes the story:

John Green is a best-selling author and a FIFA-loving YouTube star. AFC Wimbledon is a football club in London that plays in the fourth tier of the English football league system. The story of how one used his unorthodox fame to finance a club thousands of miles away is an inspiring tale of cultural exchange, triumphant populism, and the weird power of the internet.

It’s frightening how much money some people make from YouTube, but I’ve yet to see it spent in a way like this.

Anyone want to start a similar story with Newcastle, buy out Mike Ashley and send the Magpies roaring back to Europe?

    No, didn’t think so.
