There’s no doubt that the 2003 remake of The Italian Job was a wonderful addition to the original film. Starring Mark Wahlberg, Charlize Theron, Jason Statham, Edward Norton, Seth Green, and Mos Def to name a few, fans of the 1969 original were not disappointed.

Let’s just hope they feel the same about what’s to come, however.

Hollywood’s intense lack of creativity has recently seen a spate of series adapted from very successful films, like Fargo and Limitless, and now they plan to turn The Italian Job into one as well.

Well, The Verge’s Michael Liptak is very excited – so much so that he thought he would pen a love letter to the film franchise and, in his eye, its only star:

I fell completely in love with both Italian Job films, but not for the usual reasons. They’re certainly not the greatest heist films ever put to the silver screen, nor are they particularly notable when it comes to plot or their acting.

What they do have is those plucky cars at their center. They’re small, fast, and seem to exude personality. We MINI drivers often wave as we pass by one another, recognising that we’ve bought into a small, almost cult-like community of motorists.

I’ve thought a lot about my relationship with driving and the experience of watching these films over the years. I’ve jokingly called the 2003 reboot a glorified car commercial, but in some ways, it was the best sort of advertisement for the car. The movie was a bit of a love letter to the car, and it showed off its plucky energy as Charlie Croker and sped through Italy or LA to steal a whole bunch of gold.

Chances are, I’ll be entirely let down by this new show, but hey, as long as there’s some sort of implausible car chase involving MINI Coopers, I’ll be happy.

    And there you have it.

Here’s a reminder of the 2003 version, and if you’re inspired to get your hands on a MINI just email editor@2oceansvibe.com –  subject ‘The Italian Job’ – and we’ll hook you up with a racy discount.
