Donald Trump’s “pussy” comment was the highlight sleaziest topic of conversation this past weekend.
From men laughing at their recognition of such common remarks, to women speaking up about how often they have been the subject of such “humour”, everyone had something to say about it.
While onlookers waited with bated breath to see how Trump would respond during the second presidential debate, it was Melania Trump’s choice of clothing that got tongues wagging – and not for the reasons you would think.
Rather, it was the name of her very conservative fuchsia pink top – a “Pussy-bow silk crepe de chine shirt” costing $1 100 (R15 000).
Once people realised the name, they started wondering if she had worn it on purpose.
Yet the campaign’s spokeswomen claimed the choice in clothing was unintentional:
This from Quartz:
The style, which has actually come back into fashion in recent months due largely to Gucci’s influence, has a mixed history of its own – especially among feminists. Some loathe it, because it recalls the way women entering the workforce en masse in the 1970s and 1980s had to conform to office dress codes established by men: The blouse was seen as the women’s equivalent of the shirt and tie.
Other women embrace that history, and the empowerment they find in the name, which some believe started because of the bow’s resemblance to a vagina. (It’s more likely the name is derived from the bows people used to tie on their cats’ necks, as implied by the style’s other name: the pussycat-bow.)
The shirt also became closely associated with Margaret Thatcher, Britain’s prime minister throughout the 1980s. The conservative leader wore them because she found them “rather softening and pretty,” as a contrast with her notoriously tough persona.
And there you have it. Whether or not Melania’s choice had anything to do with its history is yet unknown, but I am sure she will be keeping mum on the subject as well as the very one that brought it to attention.
