No doubt about it, the police presence at the #FeesMustFall protest outside Parliament yesterday proved they were ready for a fight. And no doubt about it, everything was peaceful until just a few protestors decided to cause shit.
You see, parents, staff, and students stood together on Plein / Roeland Street outside Parly in what has been labeled the biggest student protest since the beginning of our democracy to call on Blade Nzimande, who was in Parliament for the mini budget speech.
But then violence descended on Cape Town’s CBD and, along with stun grenades, rubber bullets, and bricks, chaos erupted.
Parts of the CBD will be closed until Monday.
Watch the violence unfold:
News24′s Nick Pawson, who was covering the protests, reported that:
Things were fairly peaceful until a group of protesters, who had set fire to a large piece of cardboard, launched the burning object at the line of riot police near the main entrance to Parliament on Roeland street. Then all hell broke loose.
You know you get those shower thoughts? Last night, mine was this: It’s really unfortunate that people who participate in protests aren’t profiled, in the sense that we have no idea who it was that started the violence. Students? Outside forces? A person with psychopathic tendencies?
No idea.
