Holy cow.
As if it wasn’t hard enough being a teen, here’s another piece of coded technology that is causing serious harm, albeit not purposely.
Called Sayat.me, the app and website “allows children to bully each other”, and has been blamed for the recent death of a 15-year-old George Hessay from East Yorkshire, reports The Telegraph.
The Estonian creation has since been taken offline by its administrators after the teen had allegedly been abused over it, driven to suicide.
But how does it work? Here’s a little about Sayat.me:
The app, which is a growing craze among teenagers, allow users to post anonymous “feedback” about their friends. It has been criticised for creating a vehicle for cyber-bullying among school children.
Sayat.me, which is based in Estonia, is designed for business users seeking “constructive, honest feedback” from colleagues and clients. It has 30 million users, many of whom are believed to be teenagers.
Hessay, a keen footballer, was found hanged, and his family has since received hundreds of messages of love and support from the community, many shocked over what transpired.
