It’s tough to keep up with all the great series coming out at the moment, but back in the day certain shows stood head and shoulders above the others.

We’ve waxed lyrical about The Sopranos before, but coming in a close second was The Wire.

David Simon and his creative partner George Pelecanos were the brains behind the iconic series, and now they’ve teamed up again for The Deuce.

Starring James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal, this is one you’re not going to want to watch with your kids.

    Via the trailer’s synopsis:

The Deuce follows the story of the legalization [sic] and subsequent rise of the porn industry in New York’s Times Square from the early 1970s through the mid-1980s, exploring the rough-and-tumble world at the pioneering moments of what would become the billion-dollar American sex industry.

There are two trailers doing the rounds ahead of the release on HBO on September 10:

    And the second:

You can just tell the soundtrack from this one is going to be an absolute ripper.

The Daily Beast driving home that point about not watching with the kiddies:

It’s sex as a business. It’s sex as something normally human. It’s just sex. And what’s inherently wrong with that?

…Meticulously researched from real-life players of the time, The Deuce is a historical-fiction origin story about how we became a nation obsessed with porn.

…there is a lot of sex in The Deuce. Some of the sex scenes might seem familiar to other steamy romps you’ve seen on cable TV. Others are frank. Some are transactional. Some are intimate. Others are mechanical. And, as it were, a few even show penises.

Don’t worry, chaps, I’m sure there’ll be plenty of breasts too.
