The penthouse situated at the top of the magically neo-gothic Woolworth Building in New York has finally been put up for sale.
Interested parties have been waiting three years for this moment, when Alchemy Properties first announced its plans to turn “the Pinnacle” into a penthouse.
Spanning five floors, it takes up the iconic green copper crown of the building and is expected to fetch $110 million (R1,4 billion).
And that’s just for the shell.
The interior of the space, which previously housed the Woolworth Building’s mechanical equipment, has been left raw so the buyer can decide what they would like to have, explains NY Curbed:
Alchemy had to carry out extensive work before making it livable [sic]; this included getting permission from the Landmarks Preservation Commission to add more windows, and replacing 3,500 pieces of damaged terra cotta on the facade, according to the Wall Street Journal.
The seven-floor penthouse will start at about 700 feet and will come with a 400-square-foot open-air observatory..
At the time it was built, back in 1913, the Woolworth Building was the world’s tallest – a title it held until 1930.
Now, 104 years old, the not-yet-public listing could go down as the most expensive sale ever downtown, far surpassing the current $50,9 million (R680 million) record at Chelsea’s Walker Tower.
Another extravagant record for an iconic building – I wonder what the inside will eventually look like. We’ll have to wait and see.
