  • Five Inconsistencies In Henri Van Breda’s Story [Video]

Henri van Breda, accused of killing his parents (Martin and Teresa) and brother (Rudi), as well as the attempted murder of his sister (Marli), tried his best to give insight on the night he’d rather forget.

He first took the witness stand in the Western Cape High Court last Tuesday, and has spent the last week giving his version of what happened back in 2015.

He concluded giving evidence on Monday.

Of course, the accused’s side of the story has been under as much scrutiny as Oscar Pistorius’ was – here are five vulnerabilities from Times LIVE:

    1. We don’t know if Rudi was “just lying there” or moving around violently after the attack:

In his plea statement, van Breda referenced Rudi as “just lying there” with no further elaboration about his brother:

[I]n court he said Rudi was “gurgling” and “moving around violently”.

If Rudi was incapacitated or deceased‚ he would have not have been able to move himself off the bed‚ and there is no space in the timeline given in the plea statement that would have allowed the alleged attacker to do it before fleeing.

This would mean van Breda himself had done it.

    2. “The emotionless call to emergency services””

Van Breda says that he decided not to make use of the emergency numbers on the fridge as they would “not have been of assistance” in the time of need. He then continued with an “emotionless call to emergency services”.

Prosecutor Susan Galloway’s words evoke suspicion:

“During this whole conversation you remained calm and tried to assist her in actually pinpointing your location. You didn’t use the numbers on the fridge because of the delay‚ but how come you [didn’t] get frustrated when they [took so] long to react?”

    3. Numerous calls to his girlfriend, Bianca:

Van Breda rang his girlfriend several times while he was on the phone with emergency services. Galloway continued:

“On the one side‚ you tell the court you didn’t think the numbers on the fridge would be of assistance for quick help – or even ask the neighbours for help. Yet you [called] Bianca. What could she do to help? A minor schoolgirl residing in a hostel?”

He responded by saying that she was his only friend at the time.

    4. If (according to Henri) Rudi was still alive during the time of the call, why didn’t he mention his dying brother?

He says that he assumed they would come to try and save the lives of “all family members”.

Galloway, however, was having none of it, answering:

“You took the trouble of telling them your sister was still alive‚ but [made] no mention of brother Rudi‚ whom you now claim was gurgling and moving around violently from his injuries?”

    5. The recollection of a single patch of blood on the stairs:

After van Breda confirmed that he noticed a “dry patch of blood on the stairs”, Galloway pointed out that it was strange he would notice that, but not the masses of blood on the floor “in the wake of the brutal attacks”.

    She said:

“You are able to observe one blood spot‚ and match it to where your alleged stab wound must have [taken place]. Then how come you didn’t notice other blood spots on the steps?”

With a story that’s thinning out by the day, when will Henri crack?
